In today’s class, Mr. Melhorn, the assistant principal at South Western High School, came in to discuss with our class protocols that are taken in different situations. The main event he focused on was an active shooter in the building. He gave us scenarios and let us first decide how we would handle it. Then he showed us the 3 main things to do in a dangerous situation like an active shooter; evacuate, hide, and defend yourself. The best thing you can do in a dangerous situation is escape the building if possible. It’s best to have an escape route in mind. If you cannot leave the building for whatever reason the next best thing you can do is hide. Staying hidden, out of sight, and covered will make it harder for the shooter to see you shoot you. Shooters usually aim for people that look like easy targets. Ultimately, if all else fails you will need to defend yourself. When put in this kind of situation you can use almost anything as a weapon.
In the past year at my school we haven’t had any active shooters, but we have had a few bomb threats that my school had to deal with. The protocol that my school took was as exactly as Mr. Melhorn said the first step should be: evacuate. The whole high school evacuated the building and went to the middle school. It was important that my school did this because it kept all the students safe. I think that having a plan set up in case of dangerous situations is necessary because then everybody knows what to do and stays calm. I really enjoyed learning about this topic because of what has been going on in the world recently with all the shootings and attacks. Also, since America has the most school shootings in the world, I think it’s important that we learn what to do in those types of situations. Even though no one ever thinks that it will happen to their own school, you never know what could happen. The US alone has had 62 school shootings in just 2015. (Gunter n.p.) In my apocalyptic scenario, having some sort of protocol would be helpful in keeping everyone calm and focused on the goal of getting rescued. An idea protocol to have after a plane crash would be to get everyone together, deal with any medical concerns, start a fire, and get food and water. Having a protocol would increase the chances of everyone surviving until they get rescued.
